Kindness is a strange thing. It’s something we all know to have as a desirable virtue, something that’s right, something that makes us feel good. But it’s simply one of the most difficult things to do in our day to day life -to intentionally choose to be kind.
I decided to create a blog post series here on & just like that dedicated to uncovering what kindness really means because I know that I am probably the most clueless as to how to be genuinely kind, beyond being polite and courteous according to today’s societal standards. Through these posts, hopefully we can all learn a little something, bit by bit.
I thought I’d start of the series with a rather simple post. I finished reading The Kite Runner a few weeks ago (I know, I’m very late to the party), and aside from it being one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read, the lessons the characters learned speak so true to what I think we can all learn today in 2018.
A quote from the novel that stood out to me reads the following:
“I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”
For those of us that may be holding onto grudges or painful memories and it seems like we’ll never be able to extend forgiveness to that other person, this quote is encouraging in that maybe, forgiveness does not always have to be an intentional, defined act that we all make it out to be. But rather sometimes, forgiveness can simply just happen gradually over time, as our minds and hearts decide it’s not important enough to hold onto that pain anymore, and it just lets go, sometimes without us even noticing it.
